I took a month long break from writing in June promising myself I would get back to it on the 01st July with much more gusto and enthusiasm. So first week of July I got back to it pretty well ticking all the right boxes and was so excited to be back!! Past few days though, as I struggled to gather my mind together for the daily messages I realised if I do not change something urgently I will need another month long break within days. A little more brainstorming and I realised we cannot afford to give anything another shot without asking some hard questions about the last time and committing to make some changes this time around.
To make this worth your time, can you think of any two goals/situation that you have been thinking of giving another shot and keep these in mind as we explore the three questions you ought to ask yourself before you give anything a second chance.
Is it still worth it or realistic? Sometimes the only reason we try to give things a second chance is we are burdened by the feeling of defeat about not getting it done the last time. Unfortunately you cannot afford to invest your time, money and energy on anything just to relieve your guilt. So just check to see if those goals still support your current values, aspirations and priorities and are realistic for where you are and want to be. Is that goal or situation still realistically aligned with your values, circumstances and realistic?
If the goal is still realistic and relevant, the second question is what did not work out the last time? Whether you started and made some progress or you just never started at all, you need to establish what went wrong the last time. It may be easy to quickly dismiss it as just being lazy, not feeling up to it or some dismissive excuse but have an objective look at things. The two key reasons we procrastinate or quit on things are because we are not sure how to go about it OR we do not have the capacity to get it done it. So this is the part where you calm down and have some real hard conversations. In my case it boiled down to trying to rush inspiration in the morning when I am so not a morning person-in retrospect that was such a recipe for disaster. So back to your goals-why did you not get this done the last time? What went wrong?
If the goal is still worth it and you have figured out what went wrong the big question is what will you do differently to make this shot count? To save yourself from the insanity of doing the same things over and over yet expecting different results, you have to decide what you will do differently. Figure out what you will do differently this time around. I had to create time in the evenings(night owls prime time J)
as I wound down the day to draw inspiration and this has been going quiet well so far. For you this may mean changing strategies, building better capacity, getting an accountability buddy or coach or whatever it will take for you to neutralise the challenges from the last time. The point is you need to decide what changes you are going to make this time around.
Remember no experience is wasted if you choose to learn from it. I have two goals that went through the three questions test and though this feels like putting myself on the spot, I will share them with you for accountability and also so you can give me ideas on how I could get this done.
1. I will practise coaching for 100 hours towards my life coaching certificate by 31 December 2015 (I have reserved one slot of 20 hours for someone from the blog community-email me if you are committed to something like this)
2. Every week I will publish four #IAWG posts and one post under #Someaha/#TheProcess/#RasFridaysStory every week
I hope this has been helpful for you and you have really started thinking around these questions to save yourself some frustrating merry go round non progress. I would also love to hear from you what you have found to work when giving your goals yet another shot.
1. Is it still relevant and realistic to your current circumstance?
2. What went wrong the last time you tried it?
3. What will you differently this time around?
