I started off briskly to make sure I get there within reasonable time at least. As I walked I imagined how this meeting would go and how the partnership would make a big difference for the business and the community at large. For a moment I snapped out of my day dream and noticed a guy hawking his goods in front of me. He was walking at a very slow pace, infact his pace was as good as crawling. From a distance I marvelled at how slow he was walking and wondered just what he hoped for anything as he was going through the day at such a slow rate. As my mind drifted off to imagine and speculate and focused on this hawker and his possible scenarios I slowly reduced my pace and remained just behind him for a long time as I got so caught up in his situation. I was called back to earth by my ringtone and when I saw that it was my partner calling I started the conversation by jokingly asking him to give our guest some water to drink. However the moment he spoke I could tell from his tone that he wasn't at all amused with me so I rushedly told him I was two blocks away just as he informed me the other man had been in his office for a while and was about to leave.
All my senses came to life as I immediately walked past that hawker, infact, I started running and by the time I got there, the man was on his way out and I was only introduced as the other guy..who came up with the idea. I never really got the chance to speak to him or even say anything to him before he bade my friend goodbye and promised to meet him next week and in satire manner, he said to me "I hope you will be able to make it, on time."
This always reminds me of how we chase our goals and vision in life. Sometimes we have the right passion and the vision but due to poor communication, lack of urgency or understanding the urgency that a particular action needs in the overall achievement of that vision, we lose valuable opportunities.
The hawker I later realised is a representation of those we follow in life. He was doing his business, his pace was good for his vision, he can spend the whole day wandering around town because that's the nature of his vision and business but mine was time bound with a specific location but like most people, I was following the hawker, not understanding the urgency of my vision.
Everyday we lose opportunities that will help us achieve our vision not because we're not passionate about it but because of simple things like these that we never really pay attention to. Do you have a clear vision which you have clearly communicated to all the stakeholders in your life? Are you following a hawker, whose business and mission is to walk around town trying to sell their wares whilst yours have a specific location and time bound? In our quest for daily improvement, let us re-evaluate and check if we doing the simple things properly. That's the only way we can begin to do the proper things for our vision at the proper pace.
